Personalized Pillows with Spoonflower 2-for-1 Fat Quarters
Ok! Keep following me on this one. I know it’s only November, but like Christmas is hastily approaching. Right now, I am going to make your life SO MUCH EASIER.
Spoonflower is a bomb-ass website that allows you to print your own fabric onto a multitude of fabric choices. For the next two days, they are doing 2-for-1 fat quarters, which is the coolest thing possible if you want fun and affordable Christmas gifts for all.
I printed all of my pillows out on a mixture of Kona Cotton Ultra, which is $19.00USD per yard and 21″ by 18″ for a FQ and the Linen-Cotton Canvas blend, which is $27.00USD per yard and 27″ by 18″ for a FQ. For me, the material choice was determined by how many images I could fit onto a single fat quarter to maximize my pillow count by minimizing my cost. If you are lost, trust me! It all makes sense.
Spoonflower gives you an excellent representation of the fabric so you can see exactly what it will print out like. You can see from above that I could get two images of my Opa being super silly on one Linen Cotton Canvas Fat Quarter. Hell yes!
Now, if you want a bigger pillow, you can just adjust your fabric choice and the size of your photo to get the most optimum quality.
I got one pillow from one fat quarter in the Kona Cotton for this pillow, which cut out is approximately a 18″x 18″ piece of Fabric.
For my collage pillows, I put all of the photos into photoshop and played around with them until I had the design I liked, and then uploaded the whole photo file to Spoonflower, exactly how I did above. It’s super simple to create exactly what you want.
Fabric wise, that’s it! You are done! Now you wait for Spoonflower to print and ship all of your amazing Fat Quarteres (if you are in the Pacific North Fresh, the shipping does take a little bit, and you will have extra customs charges).
Next up, I used this handy easy DIY Zipper Pillow Cover by Lia Griffith to complete the pillow. In all honestly, it might take you max 10 minutes to whip up one of these babies but people will think it is worth 1 million dollars. EXACTLY 1 MILLION DOLLARS.
I did not use Spoonflower fabrics for the back of my pillows. Instead, I used fat quarters purchased at my local fabric store, Spool of Thread, as they are only $4 dollars each for quilting weight cottons. Can you say steal of a deal?! I can. STEAL OF A DEAL! However, if you did want to use Spoonflower printed fabrics, just remember that your pillow baby will need material for the front and the back, but you can get one small pillow for one FQ, or you can order two FQ’s for one pillow.
Now, the picture above was taken on a poor phone camera and filtered through instagram, which is why the quality does not look as stellar as it could. However, the photo below was a legit professional wedding photoshoot photo and the pillow turned out ah-may-zing.
I pre-washed all of my fabrics, just in-case the pillow cases needed to be washed after gifting. However, I don’t think this step is absolutely mandatory. If you do, know that darker colours with less amazing image quality do tend to fade a bit in the wash. You can see that in the little pug babies face down below. However, considering the fact that I stole pictures off of instagram taken by an older smart phone, I couldn’t have expected them to turn out as well as they did!
There you have it! In the time it took you to read this blog post, you probably could have sewn yourself a pillow. Rock it with some personally printed Spoonflower Fabrics and you have a bonafide Christmas gift on your hands. Also, just an FYI, don’t expect to print a pillow with a bunch of pugs faces on it and not think that a pug butthole is going to be all over the pillow in a few short hours. That’s just logic, folks. Pug butthole logic.
If you make yourself a pillow, pleeeassssee send it to me as I totally want to see your makes!
Also, if you are looking for more Spoonflower ideas, check out their blog for more ideas! But do it quick, you don’t have a lot of time left! The big sell for the2-for-1 Fat Quarters are the DIY Tea Towels, which are totally adorable and a very awesome gift. You just sew up four corners and you got yourself a Tea Towel Calendar!
That’s it! And now, I have started the Countdown to Christmas clock. SpoooOOoOooOOooOky.
